Top Tips For Steam Cleaning Your Carpet

Preparation

This deep cleaning process is best saved for a day when the carpet will be left alone to dry, preferably with the windows open. Choose a steam cleaner that is suitable for your type of carpet. You want one that will remove enough water to allow the carpet to dry within 12 hours.

When choosing a cleaning solution read the manufacturer’s guide and be sure to test on an inconspicuous area to be sure the carpet’s dye and fibres will not be affected by the formula.

Move all furniture and rugs off the carpet to expose the whole area to be cleaned then vacuum to remove any solid dirt and spot clean any heavily stained areas.

The Process

Follow the steam cleaner and cleaning solution’s instructions for use, being aware of all measurements. The process is to blast the carpet with a jet of hot water and cleaning solution. Then vacuum the water and dirt back up off the carpet.

Start cleaning at the edge that is furthest away from the entrance of the room so that you do not end up walking over your freshly cleaned carpet.

Only blast the carpet with water once then run the steam cleaner over the whole carpet several times to bring up as much of the cleaning solution as possible, with some models the plastic casing allows you to see the water being extracted. You will actually be able to see the color of the water, and as you continue to use the cleaner the water will become clearer.

It is very important to remove as much of the cleaning solution as possible, as the way it works is to attract dirt away from the carpet fibres. If you do not remove all the cleaning solution then it will act as a dirt magnet long after you have stopped steam cleaning.

After cleaning

Open the windows to get the fresh air circulating around the room to help the carpet to dry faster. If you have an air humidifier or fan then put them on. It is essential that the carpet is dried as fast as possible to avoid mold or mildew forming in the fibres.

Ensure the carpet is completely dry before moving furniture back on to it, otherwise it can cause staining.

This process should be done once every 6 months to keep your carpet in great condition, or more if the carpet is in a high traffic area.
